Do you believe in signs?

I love how the universe never fails to deliver exactly what I need, precisely when I need it. One of my most favorite quotes is from the movie Signs, when Mel Gibson’s character is explaining the two types of people: those that see signs and those that think that no matter what happens, they are on their own. His monologue concludes with, “Is it possible that there are no coincidences?”

Today, without getting into too much detail, the following appeared on my Facebook wall and for reasons that would be too long to explain in a post (and wouldn’t come close to conveying the significance), it made complete sense to me and was exactly what I needed to see.

“So what you have to ask yourself is what kind of person are you. Are you the kind that sees signs, sees miracles? Or do you believe that people just get lucky. Or, look at the question this way. Is it possible, that there are no coincidences?”

As for me, I see signs.

  1. Sometimes signs can be from bad sources. When the Bible was not yet complete, seeking signs are beneficial. But it’s not for all time and for every situation. Paul the apostle in this scene said
1Co 1:22-23 “For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;”

Seeing eyes at times cannot always be the basis. Here’s the word of Christ to Thomas
John 20:29 “Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.”

But signs can be used by God in response to our faith, though not always. Our Creator has a purpose for all His creation, and our thinking will always lead us to what we’re going to do.

Great thoughts! Thanks for visiting my blog.

  3. No coincidences, ever! Everything has purpose and meaning….and if not we are eabled and empowered to assign purpose and meaning. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Looking forward to communicating further in the ethers. Blessings, Stephanie.

  4. Walked into a store, several times without going into detail very specific song come on. Too specific to mention, after certain prayer and I wish you knew my story.. But it is very strange when you can ckearly see multiple signs leading you on you way, not song. But very specific things. This has happen with one situation I’m in and well which person are you rings true.

  5. Hi Stephnie, very strange that this has been a topoc on my mind a lot lately.. In fact I was going to post today about how there are no coincidences. This goes into a long debate about predetermamism, predestination blah blah. But I have come to believe that everything happens with a purpose. But that we have free will to ignore these things, or not see the signs.

You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink. Though to be sure. I wish I had more of what I needed when I felt I needed.

  6. I am not a religious person, but I definitely believe that things happen for a reason and life presents certain things when you need them the most. You just have to be open to experiencing them. To quote the awesome movie Fools Rush In, “There are signs everywhere.”

  7. Very soothing blog! You’re correct. Here are a few lines from the poem DESIDERATA that support your thoughts… “Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.” If by chance you’re not familiar with DESIDERATA, you can find the entire poem via Google or you can read it on my website http://www.noulteriormotive.com … I posted it on 8-26-12. Desiderata is short, to the point and soothing.

  8. The universe can only unfold as it was designed to do by God. Everything happens by design. I can’t tell you how many times my wife and I have received just what we need, just when we need it. I totally agree with you! There are no coincidences.
